Tommaso Starace Quartet

March 12, 2020

8pm (Doors Open at 7:15 pm)

Welcome back to Smokey Joe’s Jazz Club! Our brilliant and diverse programme of wonderful jazz artists continues tonight, with the incredible Italian saxophonist, Tommaso Starace. Tommaso is full-on Italian, and we see his amazing passion and energy in all of his music-making. He has a truly international reputation, working with incredible musicians throughout Europe, and we are delighted that he has found his way back to the new centre of European jazz … at Smokey Joe’s!

Tommaso has performed with fellow jazz superstars, Billy Cobham, David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann, Jim Mullen, Jonathan Gee, Fabrizio Bosso, Paolo Fresu, Laurence Cottle and many more. He is also a prolific composer, and he is well known for writing songs with an intense level of swing and groove. Not surprisingly some of Tommaso’s influences are Cannonball Adderley, Clifford Brown, Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, Ennio Morricone, Stevie Wonder, and Maurice Ravel.

This evening, Tommaso will be taking us on journey exploring the music of two wildly different musicians … the brilliant saxophonist and composer, Cannonball Adderley, and the inspirational French pianist and composer, Michel Petrucciani. In this music alone, we’ll be travelling the world, finding our way through incredible compositions, bringing the best of Tommaso’s high energy, passion, swing and groove to the fore.

Joining Tommaso this evening, we have the brilliant drummer, Miles Levin, the amazingly groove-laden bassist, Wayne Matthews, and our very own whirlwind of non-stop energy, the ebullient Alex Steele on piano.

“He soars assertively when needed, cajoles and caresses with 'molto' lyricism on the ballads, and demonstrates unequivocally that it is possible for contemporary jazz to be accessible.”
Lance Liddle: ‘Bebop Spoken Here’

Smokey Joe’s is now in its third year of putting on fantastic jazz, and has made its mark as an inspirational and energetic jazz venue, intimate, colourful, and an amazing place to see a huge range of superb jazz artists of international acclaim. We’ll look forward to seeing you for this wonderful performance with our special guest for March, the amazing Tommaso Starace!
