Welcome back to Smokey Joe’s Jazz Club! We’re delighted to welcome a brand-new artist to Smokey Joe’s, an incredible rising star on the international jazz stage, the fantastic Alex Hitchcock on saxophone! Alex will be joined by the wonderful Tommy Scott (piano), Raph Mizraki (double bass) and Euan Palmer (drums).
Everyone is talking about Alex Hitchcock in the jazz media, with rave reviews from John Fordham (Jazzwise/The Guardian), Soweto Kinch (BBC Radio 3) and many more.
“Only the expression of deep concentration on his face and the lightning speed of his fingers as they negotiate the keys of his instrument give a clue to the ideas and emotions cascading from his imagination, to emerge as perfectly shaped notes and beautiful phrases from the bell of his saxophone. It’s a spellbinding process to witness.” (thejazzmann.com)
“Hitchcock blows contemporary post-Coltrane tenor soaring up into the outer limits.” (Bebop Spoken Here)
Alex has toured in Italy, Poland, Spain and Hungary, and he has played at legendary UK venues including Love Supreme Festival, the Royal Albert Hall and Ronnie Scott’s. His critically acclaimed debut album on iconic Spanish label Fresh Sound New Talent was described by All About Jazz as “an exquisitely subtle collection of tunes … the clearest indicator to date of the stratospheric trajectory on which this super-talented quintet is indubitably heading”.
He has performed with Chris Cheek, Soweto Kinch, Mark Lockheart, Andrew McCormack, Maria Chiara Argirò, Ashley Henry, Thibaut François, the Blackbyrds, and Franco-Belgian duo André Charlier/Benoit Sourisse. He has appeared at North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), Jazz à Vienne (France), Fano Jazz Festival (Italy), Festival Mas i Mas (Spain) and Glastonbury Festival (UK) as well as at the Barbican, Cadogan Hall, and Glyndebourne Opera House. His larger ensemble work includes the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra at the O2 Arena, the BBC Big Band and the Laurence Cottle Big Band.
He's an amazing talent, and we are delighted to welcome Alex to Smokey Joe’s Jazz Club, where our ethos is all about showcasing new talent and rising stars, and taking the best of the new sounds of jazz to the widest possible audiences. Joining us on this jazz quest for this gig, we have the amazing pianist, Tommy Scott. Tommy’s recent collaborations with Yuri Goloubev and Asaf Sirkis have been receiving incredible acclaim from the international jazz community, and we are ecstatic to feature Tommy on the piano this evening. Alex and Tommy are joined by incredible double bassist, Raph Mizraki, and superb dynamic young drummer, Euan Palmer.
Smokey Joe’s is now in its third year of putting on fantastic jazz, and has made its mark as an inspirational and energetic jazz venue, intimate, colourful, and an amazing place to see a huge range of superb jazz artists of international acclaim.
We’re looking forward to welcoming our outstanding special guest for April, the fantastic Alex Hitchcock.
